With friends like you…

An old friend of mine

Nearly 20+ years ago I met a good friend and we have both found ourselves at one time or another having trouble with different aspects of our lives. It's not always easy to see your friends hurt or struggle and though we all come to different turning points at different times, it's never easy to watch each other try (and sometimes fail) to overcome life's bigger obstacles.

Today I texted with that friend and hopefully he knows that I am still rooting for him as I always know he has for me. That we are ALL still rooting for him. Some of us are just more vocal than others and some of us write blog posts about it.

One thing I do know is that we never get it right the first time. Well, not the really important things anyway. I still struggle with so many things… the important things anyway. And I can't help but to think of this quote when I do:

“Mackay’s Moral: If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it.”
— Harvey Mackay

It really does sum up how most of the really important things in my life have changed. Persistent and consistent daily commitment to the little things each day add up to big changes overall. It's not easy and it can be hard to stay vigilant, but it does pay off if you can stay the course.

This reminds me…
August 22, 2014 was a Friday

Nobody stops drinking on a Friday unless they have been really trying for some time. I stopped on a Friday after countless attempts to really stop since 2009. Why do I remember 2009 so specifically? I was listening to some country music (another fact I have kept hidden... so much shame) and the following song came on. I would listen to it occasionally when I really wanted to stop during that 5 year span. Months later after being free from alcohol I listened to this song with a different perspective. So glad to have stayed persistent and today I am so glad I stay consistent. Hope you find it the same way some day, my friend.
