Artificial Artistry
Good news, illustrators! You can keep your day jobs! For now.
Recently, I fell down the rabbit hole of Artificial Intelligent image creation. I could do this all day! But in this hour of endless thinking and typing in descriptions, I was simply amazed by the images being displayed in the feed! Scary in its own way too, but if you can get over the idea of how your “creative job” may not matter in near future and begin to engage with it, you really start to see where you can utilize this as a tool in beginning to create your own work.
Below is a video that helped me to get started in exploring MidJourney.com
Amazing, right?
I was floored by what this was done with minimal input at times. I am just awestruck by the amount of detail and what this can produce. Looking at some community images can be overwhelming to think that “Ai” has produced such a beautiful result. The fact is this, we have given AI over the last 30 years so much to work with. All the photography, illustrations, computer-generated imagery, 3D artistry, reference for styles, and artistic flavor… it’s all there, just waiting to be used.
Say “Cheese”
As you can see, all you need to do is prompt the MidJourney app with descriptions. For instance. I asked for a face made of cheese, and it provided four very odd, but strangely satisfying faces made of cheese. In seconds. Not a whole day, but seconds. That is exciting and, as an artist, terrifying.
I don’t know how or why it decided to make the cheese faces Asian, but it did. What I do know is that it was completely awesome!
The “Carl D” Gallery
I typed in many search terms. I found every single one more interesting than the next. Never really knew what I would get, but I always tried to type in more details as I went along. I get the feeling that the AI was learning more every time someone tried to refine a search.
Below is the gallery of the images I gathered as I went along.
As you can see, some things are still very blurry or distorted at this stage, but I imagine it will improve dramatically soon. There are image creation/generation AI platforms out there, and they all have varying degrees of success; below are just a few that I have yet to fully explore:
As I said, it’s a bit scary to consider what these AIs are attempting. They may put a lot of artists out of work in the future. But not today.
I hope you have as much fun as I did poking around, typing your descriptions, and seeing what comes up as I did.
